I like the thematic structure you speak of, but I feel it's a bit abrupt and obvious to work in that context.Groggy Dundeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14990254767008162244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414371769828084505.post-6289370114447410302017-02-12T03:39:58.907-05:002017-02-12T03:39:58.907-05:00"The movie jumps quickly from John and Juan&#..."The movie jumps quickly from John and Juan's battle with Ruiz at the bridge, to the grotto massacre, to the night-time executions"

That's the one thing I disagree about most in the review. (well, not about jumping, but about your assessment of it). I'll concede that some transitions between scenes are not done neatly enough - but this one was, to me, highly ingenious. If there's a problem with it, it lies only in the fact that it creates a (pretty minor) plothole of how the army managed to get to the grotto after the bridge explosion. However, it's much outweighed by the gains in the thematic structure: it creates that very mood whiplash which is needed to buy into what Leone wants to say about the revolution. WHich is: your victory can never be full. Now you're happy with defeating your adversaries and cheer - and next thing you know they just take the most precious things you've got in life. THAT'S a revolution for you. That these two scenes go directly one after another is a brilliant way of conveying this simple message. The tone/context shifts, to me, seemed deliberate, mirroring the ever expanding and shifting nature of Juan's world and worldview. As predicaments become more complicated for Juan, the film seems to take more complex risks.

The accents didn't appear to distracting to me, they communicated the broad strokes of the characters and to me scenic authenticity wasn't a priority in this film. I agree with your comments about the ciphers, but I think it was definitely purposeful. I mean, cmon, The german's tank? Are you serious? Ridiculous. Ridiclously Awesome.

Speaking of awesome, best explosions in any movie of that decade.
